We were headed for Invercargill on our RV holiday covering the southern third of the South Island when we noted a landmark by the name of Slope Point. The map and guidebook told of a slight detour that, combined with a 20 minute hike, would pace us at the southernmost point of the South Island. Trivial, kitchie, perhaps . . . but we had to add Slope Point to our itinerary. We cut off the main road at Tokanui and went about 13 km and then west to a signed wide spot along the side of the road. The hike to Slope Point took all of 20 minutes down along a incredibly green grassy field (serious sheep country you know) and then across some more weathered ground to a stubby navigational beacon and the signpost that confirms one's arrival at Slope Point.
We took in the ocean view and could see Stewart Island, the much less known "third" island off the coast of the South Island. Photos of the sign were mandatory and we poked around the cliffy area for a few minutes in the ever present wind before hiking back to the car. Now obviously this is not a high point but not a low point either . . . I'd call it a good detour from the main road to take in one of those "roadside" attractions that should not be missed.
